What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese alternative medicine that has been practiced for centuries. It involves inserting thin needles into the skin at specific points to various depths. It aims to balance the ‘chi’ (pronounced as ‘chee’) energy flow in the body, flows through the body along pathways called meridians. If the flow energy is blocked or unbalanced at any point on a meridians, it is considered to cause various symptoms and health conditions along the meridian. This is the reason why a provider may apply acupuncture on other parts of the body to relieve a headache.
Acupuncture promotes good health and general well-being. Before the treatment, the provider will examine and ask what your concerns are. Then your provider will look for specific points on your body to insert thin needles into your skin. You may feel slight pressure when a needle is inserted. Most people find that it doesn’t hurt (if you are not comfortable with needles, that’s ok! We also provide acupressure as an alternative choice. You can find more information about acupressure down below). The surrounding area may tingle, feeling numb, a little sore or itchy. These feelings are normal.
In general, acupuncture is used for pain relief, such as lower back pain, neck problems or headaches.
Typical acupuncture sessions that we provide are 30min, 45min, and 60min.
Acupressure is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that has similar principles to acupuncture. It balances the circulating life force in the body (also called Chi energy) through “meridians”( energy pathways) in the body.
Acupressure is like acupuncture but without needles. Instead of needles, acupressure involves application and manipulation of manual pressure like fingertips to specific points of the body. The treatment is helpful in reducing muscle tensions, lower back pain, tension headache, etc.
People use acupressure for symptoms or conditions such as headache, muscle tension and pain relief from injuries, nausea, stress/anxiety relief.
